Background of the Study
Adult education plays a transformative role in equipping individuals with the necessary skills for effective personal and household financial management. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, the focus on adult education has proven crucial in fostering effective home budgeting practices. Research conducted between 2023 and 2025 shows that adult education initiatives enhance individuals' understanding of budgeting, saving, and financial planning (Bukar, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). These programs empower households to manage their resources more efficiently, leading to improved financial stability and reduced incidences of debt. Adult education programs typically cover a wide range of topics from basic arithmetic and financial literacy to more complex budgeting techniques and investment strategies. By engaging in these learning opportunities, individuals gain the confidence to make informed decisions about their household expenses, prioritize essential needs, and plan for future financial goals. This educational approach is particularly important in regions where economic challenges are prevalent, and financial mismanagement can have far-reaching consequences. The adoption of systematic budgeting practices through adult education can lead to more sustainable household economies, reducing the financial stress that many families face on a daily basis. Moreover, the dissemination of financial knowledge has a ripple effect on community development, as informed citizens are more likely to contribute to local economic stability. The integration of modern financial management techniques into adult education curricula has been shown to significantly improve home budgeting practices. In addition, these programs provide an avenue for community engagement, allowing participants to share experiences, challenges, and strategies for effective money management. This collaborative learning environment fosters a sense of shared responsibility and collective progress, which is essential for the broader socio-economic development of Sokoto South. Overall, the impact of adult education on home budgeting is not merely confined to individual households but extends to the community at large, promoting financial literacy and sustainable economic practices (Suleiman, 2024; Bukar, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Many households in Sokoto South face persistent challenges in managing their finances effectively, leading to issues such as overspending, mounting debts, and insufficient savings. Despite the potential benefits of adult education in enhancing financial literacy, a significant portion of the population remains unaware of effective budgeting practices. The available financial management programs are often sporadic and lack the necessary depth to address the real-life challenges faced by households. Consequently, many families struggle to allocate resources efficiently, which adversely affects their overall financial well-being. Additionally, the absence of tailored educational programs that address the specific financial contexts of Sokoto South exacerbates the problem. Traditional methods of money management continue to prevail, and there is limited exposure to modern budgeting techniques that could alleviate these issues. The disconnect between existing financial education initiatives and the practical needs of households contributes to ongoing economic instability. Moreover, cultural factors and resistance to change further hinder the adoption of effective home budgeting practices. This study aims to investigate how adult education can bridge this gap by providing comprehensive, context-specific training in financial management. It seeks to identify the barriers to effective budgeting and propose strategies for integrating modern financial practices into everyday household management. The research intends to offer insights that will help design more effective adult education programs that can address the financial challenges faced by families in Sokoto South (Bukar, 2023; Suleiman, 2024).
